It was cloudy that morning in 1963.  Would it rain?  Would our graduation ceremonies be forced indoors?  No. The sun ultimately peered through the clouds; a slight wind wafted over the athletic field.  As we sat there through fascinating speeches about what the future held for us, we were very aware of what we were leaving.

St. Louis Park High schools had been home, a place we went to every day (every weekday anyway).  We made friends.  We joined in activities.  And we learned.  All those years and all those experiences led to this day when speakers were telling us we were now ready for what lie ahead. Ready or not, that day – graduation day – had come.

It is now 55 years later.  Young Exaucee Nzuzi Longi  has grown from her high school classes and from her chance to go to state with the school choir.  Now, Exaucee will be taking her place in the processional to receive her diploma from St. Louis Park High School on June 5, 2018.  She is marching into her future with a $1,000 scholarship from the St. Louis Park Class of 1963 to help her on her path to become a nurse.

This is the fifth year that the St. Louis Park Class of 1963 has provided a $1,000 scholarship to a graduate of our alma mater.  Since the year of our 50th class reunion, we have been able to provide an annual scholarship in our name to a deserving student of each graduating class. Thank you for making this possible for the last five years!

With your help we can continue to present this scholarship in coming years. We are asking for your help now because our funds are running out.  It's time to grow the fund so we can continue to make these awards in 2019 and into the future.  St Louis Park schools gave us our start, prepared us for the next steps in our lives. This is our opportunity to not only give back, but to give forward - to help another SLP grad move on to his or her future.

Please mail your contribution for the SLP Class 1963 Scholarship fund to St. Louis Park Dollars for Scholars, P.O. Box 16403, St. Louis Park, MN 55416-0403 and indicate your contribution is for the Class of 1963 Scholarship.  For more information about Dollars for Scholars, go to https://www.slpschools.org/domain/195

Thank you!

This year's St Louis Park High School Class of 1963 Scholarship was presented to 2017 grad Devante Childress by Louise Borgman Hokenson.  Devante has the respect of his peers who cheered for him as he stepped up to accept his scholarship.  He expressed his gratitude to our class for the $1,000 scholarship that will allow him to pursue his dream of attending college.

Devante's teachers say he has grown over his years at SLP high school and described him as a leader. After finishing college he looks forward to using those leadership skills for a future in business. And, Devante speaks of his dreams of giving back and leading efforts to bring divided communities together.

This is the fourth year since our 50th class reunion that we have provided a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving student.  Thank you for making that possible!  We have some resources left in our scholarship fund but it's time to grow the fund so we can continue to make these awards in 2018 and into the future.

St Louis Park schools gave us our start and prepared us for the next steps in our lives. This is our opportunity to not only give back, but to pay it forward - to help another SLP grad move on to his or her future.

Please help us keep this fund going, send your check payable to St. Louis Park Dollars for Scholars to our class treasurer, Rollie Carlson, at 16405 Holdridge Road West, Wayzata, MN 55391.  Any contribution is appreciated.
