Here’s an update on the Class of 1963 Scholarship Fund.  The pandemic world seemed to stop for many of us but St. Louis Park High School kept on moving in ways that didn’t exist when the Class of 1963 graduated. The Class of 2020 experienced distance learning when the pandemic closed school and ceremonies for awards presentation and graduation were virtual.  The Class of 2021 started the school year with distance learning, then changed into a hybrid mode and finally had some in-person experiences. The Class of 2021 had a virtual awards presentation and is scheduled to have a masked, in-person graduation on June 8th, weather permitting.

$1000 scholarships were awarded to each of these deserving students from the Class of 1963 Scholarship Fund:

Class of 2020 – Hibo Salah is continuing her education at a local community college.  She wants to be either an accountant or an immigration social worker. Hibo was born in a refugee camp in Kenya where she learned English and sign language to help her two deaf uncles with whom she moved to the U.S.  She completed 4 years of SLP high school classes in 3 years while working almost full time and cooking for her uncles. She was grateful to have been awarded our scholarship so she can pursue her college degree.

Class of 2021 – Angel Diaz will be attending Hennepin Technical College to earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree in the school’s Heating Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program.  He is excited about his plans for his future.  While he is looking forward to meeting new friends, he will miss his SLP mates from the Dungeons & Dragons Club.

St. Louis Park High School has a very active scholarship program to help graduates achieve their postsecondary goals, improve their lives and enrich their community.  It relies of the donations of individuals, families, neighborhoods, businesses, organizations and alumni to keep paying it forward.  Our Class of 1963 is one of six classes currently sponsoring scholarships (1957, 1960, 1963, 1968, 1969, and 1988).

Scholarships are locally managed by the St. Louis Park Dollars for Scholars Board.  The board awarded $112,500 to 95 Class of 2020 seniors.  The Class of 2021 has 370 graduating seniors, 108 of whom were awarded scholarships.
