I went to undergraduate, medical school and completed general surgery training all at the University of Minnesota. It was a great time for the Univ. and the Medical School and I received a great education. I than went to Boston Children's Hospital for pediatric surgery training. I embarked on a combined clinical and academic career in pediatric surgery. I have been fortunate to have been appointed as the chief of pediatric surgery at several universities and children's hospitals and currently, I am the Surgeon-in-Chief and Chief of Pediatric Surgery, emeritus at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia and retired in 2017. I have been involved in basic science research related to the function of the small intestine and the role of growth factors to improve small intestine fuction throughout my career. When I retired, it was to join the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC, one of the leading tissue engineering institutes in the US to try to tissue engineer small intestine for infants and children who have lost most of their small intestine from congenital or acquired events. I am there 50% time. However, I still live in Wayne, PA.
I have also had the honor of being president of two major pediatric surgery associations and currently hold leadership positions in major national academic
surgery associations including being the chairman of the Pediatric Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery. I was a Regent of the American College of Surgeons, including holding the position of vice chairman.
